Nebotičnik is more than just a landmark—it’s an experience that captures the city’s spirit from new heights. This iconic Skyscraper, which translates to “The Skyscraper,” offers breathtaking panoramic views, an elegant bar, and a unique way to explore Ljubljana from above. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a curious explorer, Nebotičnik should top your list of must-see attractions. Read on to explore with us.

    • The name “Nebotičnik,” which means “skyscraper,” was a bold choice at the time of its construction. It reflected the ambition and forward-thinking attitude of Ljubljana’s city planners. The name has become legendary, symbolizing the city’s aspirations to reach new heights.
    • The Skyscraper was built in 1933 according to designs by Vladimir Šubic. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the Balkans and the ninth tallest building in Europe. It was planned to have an even taller residential building with Ljubljana’s first modern shopping arcade next to the Skyscraper, but this was never realized.
    • The Skyscraper, slightly above 70 meters high, was modeled after American skyscrapers and equipped with several technical innovations of the time, including rapid lifts, air conditioning, and oil-fueled central heating.
    • Nebotičnik was one of the first buildings in Europe to be constructed with a steel frame, a pioneering engineering technique at the time.
    • Upon its completion, Nebotičnik became a symbol of modernity and progress for Ljubljana, showcasing the city’s development and ambition.
    • The Skyscraper still serves its original purpose: on the 6th to 9th floors, it houses various shops, business offices, and residential flats.
    • The Nebotičnik Cafe is on the top of the Nebotičnik (Skyscraper) building and provides stunning views of Ljubljana in all directions. A classic Slovenian pop song called “Na vrhu Nebotičnika” (On Top of the Skyscraper) depicts a visit to the café at the top of the building as a highly romantic experience.
    • While specific names of famous visitors might not be prominently documented, the building’s status as a historical and cultural landmark ensures that it continues attracting a wide array of notable guests worldwide.

You know we love legends, so we had to find some about Nebotičnik as well.

    • Haunted Elevator. There’s a local legend about the elevator in Nebotičnik being haunted. Some visitors and staff have reported experiencing strange occurrences while using the elevator, such as sudden stops, flickering lights, and eerie sensations. This has added a layer of mystery to the building’s otherwise glamorous appeal.
    • Secret Tunnels. Rumors of secret tunnels beneath Nebotičnik that were supposedly used during World War II connected various parts of the city and were used for covert operations. While no concrete evidence supports these claims, the stories persist and add to the building’s enigmatic history.
    • Celebrities and Spies. Given its status and strategic location, Nebotičnik has allegedly been a meeting point for various international figures, including spies during the Cold War. The rooftop bar, with its panoramic views, provided an ideal spot for discreet meetings and exchanges. This brings us to the point that when you use the bathroom, you will feel like a spy as you have to enter a code.

Location and Hours

Nebotičnik is centrally located at 30 Štefanova Street, making it easily accessible whether you’re strolling through the city center or coming from other major attractions. The observation deck is open daily.

  • Night club and Café. Sunday to Wednesday, 9.00 pm to 1.00 am, Thursday to Saturday, 9.00 pm to 03.00 am.
  • Restaurant. Mondays to Saturdays, 12.00 pm to 10.00 pm, Sundays and public holidays closed.

Admission

Entry to the observation deck is free. You can waddle up (or take the elevator up), take a photo, and be gone. But we highly recommend sitting down and enjoying a drink or two with the marvelous view. You can even order pizza. The sunset views from the bar are particularly magical, providing a stunning backdrop as you sip on your favorite drink.

Getting There

The Skyscraper is within walking distance of many central hotels and attractions. If you’re using public transport, trams and buses frequently pass through the area, with stops conveniently close to Nebotičnik.

The observation deck of Nebotičnik provides exhaustive views of Ljubljana’s enchanting skyline, including the picturesque Ljubljanica River, the distinctive rooftops of the old town, and the surrounding green hills and the Ljubljana castle. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Julian Alps in the distance. The view is worth it even though you can see some maintenance neglect, especially on the windows, which is a shame as it downgrades the experience.

Tips for Your Visit

    • Timing. For the best views, visit in the late afternoon or early evening. The city lights coming on at dusk create a magical panorama.
    • Dress Code. There’s no strict dress code, but smart casual attire is recommended, especially if you plan to visit the bar.
    • Weather. Check the weather before you go. Clear skies will ensure you get the most out of the panoramic views. And beware of the wind.

Whether you’re enjoying a cocktail at the bar or marveling at the sweeping views, Nebotičnik offers an unforgettable experience that beautifully complements any trip to Slovenia’s capital.
