The Monastery of St. Andrea in Matka Canyon is one of the canyon’s most peaceful historic sites. The monastery was built in 1389 by Prince Andrea, making it more than 600 years old, and it is known for its beautiful Byzantine-style frescoes and quiet setting beside the Treska River. Surrounded by cliffs and nature, it feels hidden away from the modern world. While waddling around the monastery grounds, we tucked another penguin stone within its old stone walls, leaving behind a tiny hidden marker in a place filled with centuries of history.
