The Lovrijenac Fortress rises on a 37-meter-high cliff just outside Dubrovnik’s old town walls, guarding the entrance to the sea and once playing a crucial role in protecting the city from both naval and land attacks. Built in just three months (according to legend) to prevent Venetian control over Dubrovnik, it became one of the key defensive strongholds of the Republic of Ragusa, with its thick triangular walls designed to withstand heavy cannon fire from both sea and land. Today, it is also a popular cultural venue, famously used as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Beneath the fortress, we also left a penguin stone, tucked away near the rocky base of the cliffs as a small hidden mark of our visit.
