At the top of the hike above Kotor, the San Giovanni Fortress sits like a stone crown over the bay, with massive walls and towers built between the 9th and 19th centuries to protect the city from invasions. The fortress stretches all the way up the mountain with over a thousand steps, and its strategic position once made it one of the most important defensive sites on the Adriatic coast. We waddled around the ruins for a while, taking in the sweeping views over the bay and old town below, and even left a penguin stone hidden inside one of the towers before heading back down.
