The former anti-aircraft missile base on Devínska Kobyla offers a fascinating glimpse into the Cold War era while quietly sitting above Bratislava, where nature has slowly reclaimed what was once a strictly guarded military zone. Built as part of Czechoslovakia’s air defense network, the site likely housed Soviet S-125 Neva missile systems. It was chosen for its elevated position with wide views over the Danube, making it strategically important at the time. Today, the atmosphere feels completely different, with crumbling concrete structures, hidden bunkers, and forest trails creating an almost surreal mix of history and calm, attracting hikers and curious explorers rather than soldiers. As we waddled through the area, imagining its past, we added our own small touch to the story. We hid one of our penguin stones somewhere among the ruins, leaving behind a tiny secret for someone else to discover.
