Rising from the calm waters of the Nile near Aswan, Philae Temple feels almost mythical, as if it were floating between worlds. Dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis, this elegant complex became one of the last active centers of ancient Egyptian religion, with worship continuing here even after much of Egypt had turned to Christianity. An interesting fact is that the entire temple was carefully dismantled and relocated in the 1960s to save it from flooding after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, stone by stone, to nearby Agilkia Island. Walking through its towering columns and detailed reliefs, you can almost hear echoes of ancient rituals carried by the river breeze.
