Standing at the ancient wooden gate just beyond the pavilion of Yeongyeongdang in Changdeokgung Secret Garden feels like stepping into a different time. The gate’s muted earth tones, the soft glow of late-afternoon light, and the distant rustle of centuries-old pines invite quiet pause. Inside the secret garden, reserved only for the royal family and top courtiers until the late 20th century, was a hidden sanctuary laid out with ponds, pavilions, and thousand-year-old trees in perfect harmony with the surrounding mountains. Beneath one of the sturdy rocks just beyond the doorway, a small penguin stone lies half-hidden, waiting for someone curious enough to spot it.
