Baegyeon-ri is one of the few remaining unification villages located within the Civilian Control Zone near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Surrounded by barbed wire and guarded checkpoints, it’s a peaceful farming community that exists in one of the most heavily protected borders in the world. Despite the tension that once defined this area, the village stands as a quiet symbol of hope, home to residents who live under strict rules but carry an enduring belief in a future where the two Koreas might reunite. An interesting fact: Baegyeon-ri farmers receive tax exemptions and are required to spend a minimum number of nights per year in the village as part of their special residency privileges. Somewhere among its rice fields and watchtowers, one of our penguin stones now rests, waiting patiently for unification too, a small symbol of peace and togetherness in this divided land.
