The Nix Statue on Sørvágsvegur in the Faroe Islands is a striking sculpture that brings one of the islands’ most chilling legends to life. The “Nykur,” or water horse, is a mythical creature said to lure people onto its back before dragging them into lakes and fjords. Standing watch near Sørvágur, the statue was created by artist Pól Skarðenni and captures the eerie power of the legend with its half-submerged form. Locals still tell stories of how the Nykur’s whinny could be heard echoing across the water on quiet nights. During our visit, we wandered along the shore to admire this fascinating piece of folklore carved into bronze and stone—and of course, we left another penguin stone behind, waiting for the next curious traveler to discover. Find the resting place with the benches, and you will find the penguin stone.
