Our stay at Art Hotel Commercianti was made possible through a partnership, but the words are 100% our own—sponsored stay, unsponsored honest penguin opinions always.

If you’re looking for a stay that combines history, charm, and unbeatable location in Bologna, Art Hotel Commercianti is hard to top. Tucked right in the heart of the city, steps from Piazza Maggiore and the majestic Basilica of San Petronio, this boutique hotel immediately stands out. We were drawn in not only by its elegant design and warm atmosphere, but also by the sense of history woven into every corner—the building itself dates back to the Middle Ages. In a city filled with character, Art Hotel Commercianti manages to capture the essence of Bologna perfectly: authentic, stylish, and full of stories. We knew we had to experience it firsthand, and we’re so glad we did.

Art Hotel Commercianti is in a historic building right on Via de’ Pignattari, steps from Piazza Maggiore in the heart of Bologna’s old town. Once the former city hall during the Middle Ages, the property carries centuries of history within its walls, blending Gothic charm with modern comfort. Unlike many newer boutique hotels, Commercianti embraces its heritage—vaulted ceilings, antique furnishings, and traces of its medieval past give every corner a story to tell. Yet, despite its age, the hotel feels anything but outdated: careful renovations have preserved its historic character while introducing the comforts today’s travelers expect. The result is a true gem in Bologna, steeped in history, rooted in authenticity, and perfectly placed for exploring the city’s cultural treasures.

📍Address: Via de’ Pignattari, 11, 40124 Bologna BO, Italy

Art Hotel Commercianti couldn’t be more central, placing you at the very heart of Bologna’s historic center. Arriving by car is possible, though driving into the old town means navigating Bologna’s ZTL (limited traffic zone). Thankfully, the hotel provides access permits for guests and offers convenient private parking nearby, making the process surprisingly smooth. If you are arriving via plane, the hotel offers an airport transfer service, which can be arranged in advance for an extra fee. A taxi or private car takes about 20 minutes from Guglielmo Marconi Airport and usually costs around €25–30, while the hotel can help book this directly for you. For those who prefer public transport, the Marconi Express monorail connects the airport to Bologna Centrale in just 7 minutes, and from there it’s either a short taxi ride or a 20-minute waddle to the hotel. If you are traveling on a budget, you can also take bus 949 to Piazza Malpighi for about €6, with only a quick stroll to the entrance.

Once settled in, you’ll find that the city’s main attractions are all within an easy five- to ten-minute waddle. Staying here means the best of Bologna is literally at your doorstep.

Hotel Surroundings

  • Shopping Opportunities Nearby. From the hotel’s doorstep, you can wander straight into the city’s elegant shopping streets: Via dell’Indipendenza for big-name boutiques, Galleria Cavour for luxury designers, and the charming Quadrilatero market for gourmet delights. Whether it’s handmade leather goods, artisanal chocolates, or bottles of aged balsamic vinegar, the temptation to take a piece of Bologna home is everywhere.
  • Cultural Sites. The hotel itself sits next to the Basilica of San Petronio, one of Europe’s largest churches, and just a short stroll leads you to the iconic Two Towers—Asinelli and Garisenda—that dominate Bologna’s skyline. Within minutes, you’ll also find the Archiginnasio, former seat of Europe’s oldest university, and the stunning Teatro Anatomico, where students once studied medicine.
  • Dining Options. Bologna is the food capital of Italy, and from the hotel you’re surrounded by trattorias, osterias, and wine bars serving the city’s legendary cuisine. A few minutes’ waddle leads you into the Quadrilatero, a bustling food district where fresh pasta, cured meats, and regional wines overflow from every stall and restaurant. Among others, there is Vicolo Colombina, less than a minute’s waddle away; La Vecchia Scuola Bolognese, classic Bolognese cuisine served in a warmly rustic setting; Osteria al 15, a favorite for its hearty regional dishes and intimate ambiance, and much more, thanks to the supreme location of the hotel.

We arrived later in the evening, a little travel-weary, but the moment we stepped inside Art Hotel Commercianti, we were instantly charmed by its warm ambience. The lobby isn’t grand in size, yet it feels elegant and inviting, with historic touches that immediately set the tone for the stay. At the reception desk, the staff welcomed us with genuine smiles and effortless hospitality, making the whole process smooth and stress-free. Check-in was quick, efficient, and full of small courtesies, exactly what you hope for after a journey. Within just a few minutes, we had our keys, a helpful overview of the hotel’s services, and recommendations for exploring Bologna’s center, which was waiting right outside the door. Even though we arrived late, we felt completely at ease and well taken care of, a perfect start to our stay.

The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, so no matter when you arrive, someone is always there to assist you. Official check-in begins at 14:00, while check-out is expected by 11:00.

We stayed in the Neptune Suite, located on the upper floors of Art Hotel Commercianti, and from the moment we stepped inside, we were amazed. The suite immediately stood out for its beauty and uniqueness, combining historic character with a refined sense of style. The bedroom was impressively spacious, with a private walk-in closet that added an extra touch of luxury. A large, elegant bathroom completed the space, making it feel both comfortable and indulgent.

The suite offered everything we needed: a generous bed dressed in rich fabrics, a cozy couch, a flat-screen TV, and even a table perfect for working or planning the next day’s adventures. The warm lighting, thoughtful design, and colors made the room feel not just like a place to sleep, but like a space to enjoy truly. Every detail, from the furnishings to the atmosphere, was beautifully executed, turning our stay into an experience that felt both memorable and special.

As an extra thoughtful detail, we were greeted with a handwritten welcome message and a plate of chocolates waiting on the table, a small gesture that made us feel immediately at home.

Our bathroom was equally impressive, spacious, elegant, and designed with comfort in mind. Inside, we found everything we could need: plenty of fresh towels, soft bathrobes, slippers, sponges, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, and other essential toiletries. It felt wonderfully generous, almost as if the hotel had thought of every little detail in advance. Stepping inside, we loved the marble finishes, and the space itself felt bright and luxurious.

In addition to the spacious bathroom, we also had an extra step-in closet, which quickly became one of our favorite features of the suite. It was the perfect spot to store our luggage neatly out of the way, giving the bedroom an even more open and uncluttered feel. The closet offered plenty of space for hanging clothes and organizing belongings, and it even included a safe, which was ideal for keeping our valuables secure while we explored Bologna. It was a small detail, but one that made the room feel even more comfortable and thoughtfully designed.

We didn’t expect a regular breakfast; this is Italy, after all, and Art Hotel Commercianti certainly didn’t disappoint. The buffet is served below the first floor in a vaulted, medieval-inspired “Well Room” that, despite being technically in the basement, feels nothing like a hidden cellar. It’s bright, atmospheric, and historically charming thanks to stone wells and architectural details from centuries past. The space is spacious and elegantly arranged, offering everything you could wish for: an abundance of sweet pastries that perfectly capture the Italian morning tradition of cappuccino and cornetti, alongside a savory spread of local cold cuts, regional cheeses, eggs, fresh bread, yogurts, cereals, homemade jams, fruit juices, and even vegan and gluten‑free options. Watching the attentive staff take coffee or tea orders and bring them over to your table made the experience feel truly personal. Its generous variety and excellent quality are hard to beat in terms of breakfasts.

Sala Del Pozzo

Apart from its elegant suites and generous breakfast, Art Hotel Commercianti also caters to guests looking for a venue to host special occasions or professional gatherings. The hotel features the Sala del Pozzo, a 77-square-metre meeting room that blends the charm of the medieval building, complete with vaulted ceilings and ancient Roman remains, with the modern equipment needed for a successful event. Whether it’s a corporate conference, product presentation, press event, or even a more intimate family celebration, the space adapts easily, accommodating up to 35 people in various layouts. Though we didn’t have the chance to see or use it ourselves, it’s reassuring to know that the option is there, especially in such a central location. With Wi-Fi, projector, audio system, and catering possibilities for coffee breaks or light lunches, the Art Hotel Commercianti stands out not only as a boutique stay in the heart of Bologna but also as a refined business hotel ready to host events in a truly unique atmosphere.

The Hotel’s Atmosphere and Interior Charm

While you waddle inside the hotel, you will feel like waddling into Bologna’s history while still enjoying the conveniences of today. Although the building is centuries old, it’s equipped with modern comforts, including an elevator, making it easy to move between floors. What makes the hotel truly special, however, is the way it preserves its medieval character. In the middle of the common areas, you’ll find an authentic medieval pillar standing as a reminder of the building’s origins. At the same time, statues and artworks are scattered across the hallways and stairwells, creating a slight gallery-like feel as you explore. The tall windows invite natural light, softening the rich colors and classic décor. We never took the elevator, instead waddling up the stairs to discover the beauty of the hotel.

For our two-night stay at Art Hotel Commercianti in April 2024, the total cost came to €338.40. Our rate included a discount thanks to our collaboration with the hotel, but even at full price, we feel the experience offers strong value. The location alone, literally steps from Piazza Maggiore and right beside the Basilica of San Petronio, would justify a premium, yet the hotel delivers much more than convenience. Spacious, beautifully designed rooms and suites, attentive staff, a generous breakfast spread, and thoughtful touches like private parking, bike rentals, and event facilities all contribute to the sense of quality. While it’s not the cheapest option in Bologna, for travelers who want to stay in the very heart of the city while enjoying a blend of medieval charm and modern comfort, Art Hotel Commercianti represents excellent value for money.
