In the village of Mikladalur on Kalsoy Island, you’ll find one of the Faroe Islands’ most captivating landmarks: the statue of the Seal Woman. This bronze figure, gazing out over the wild North Atlantic, recalls the local legend of a seal who shed her skin to become human but was forced back into the sea after a tragic betrayal. An interesting fact is that the statue was unveiled in 2014 to commemorate the centuries-old tale, and it has since become one of the most photographed spots in the Faroe Islands. During our visit, we couldn’t resist adding our own little story to the place — we left a penguin stone close to the Seal Woman, waiting for the next curious traveler to discover it before the Seal Woman claims it.
