Right above the old mining tunnels near Smolník, Slovakia, the Scenic Viewpoint offers a striking panorama of the valley’s layered mining history and rugged natural beauty. From this elevated vantage, you gaze down upon the entrances to abandoned adits, remnants of a once-thriving medieval and early modern mining industry that extracted gold, copper, and antimony from the Volovské Hills. The viewpoint sits along the Rotenberg geotourism trail, which winds through historic tunneling shafts such as Pavol and Peter, inviting reflection on the region’s transformation from industrialheartland to heritage landscape . Whether at sunrise or in late afternoon light, the sweeping view of forested slopes, faint traces of old mining works, and distant hills creates a contemplative moment that fuses natural calm with echoes of the miners’ past. We climbed up and left a stone behind.
