Experience boutique elegance and culinary flair in Znojmo
Our Penguin Rating

If you’re looking for something more modern and off the radar in South Moravia, Hotel Mariel in Znojmo might just surprise you. We stumbled upon it while searching on Google, drawn in by the sleek design and understated charm visible even through its minimalist website. What caught our attention even more? It’s not listed on Booking.com or the usual travel platforms. That instantly piqued our curiosity. In a region where many hotels adhere to a traditional aesthetic, Mariel stands out with a contemporary approach to both hospitality and design. We knew we had to check it out ourselves, and we’re glad we did.
Hotel Mariel Znojmo is situated in a building on Čermákova Street in the heart of the old town, having been newly transformed by its thoughtful owners into a sleek, modern boutique hotel. The property opens onto a bustling transit route yet remains refreshingly quiet inside, thanks to high-quality soundproofing and careful renovation. While Znojmo itself wears centuries of history, from medieval walls to baroque churches, Mariel takes a different path: it forgoes historic grandeur in favor of clean lines, contemporary finishes, and minimalist flair. From its first renovation to the present day, the hotel has evolved into a hidden gem: off the radar, off mainstream booking platforms, yet firmly in step with today’s design-oriented traveler.
Location and Accessibility
📍Address: Mariánské náměstí 10, CZ 669 02 Znojmo
Hotel Mariel enjoys the best of both worlds, right in the heart of town yet tucked away enough to feel peaceful. We arrived by car, and parking turned out to be smooth and stress-free. There’s a large lot behind the hotel that accommodates most vehicles, plus an additional smaller space available for guests who arrive later or need quick access. Driving here is easy: take the D52 route from Brno, follow signs to Znojmo, then continue onto the bypass before turning into the historic center via Komenského Street. From there, a short five-minute drive leads directly to Mariel’s entrance. Pedestrians also find it easy to get around. Old Town’s main attractions lie within a ten-minute waddle, making the hotel equally convenient for car travelers and those on foot.
Hotel Surroundings
- Shopping Opportunities Nearby. Hotel Mariel sits just steps from Mariánské náměstí, placing you in the center of Znojmo’s walkable historic district. While the town leans more toward culture than consumerism, you’ll still find a curated selection of boutique shops, local design stores, wine sellers, and gourmet markets within a few minutes’ walk. Handcrafted ceramics, Moravian wines, and artisanal food products are among the most tempting souvenirs.
- Cultural Sites. Znojmo’s layered history surrounds the hotel. A five-minute waddle brings you to the imposing St. Nicholas Church and the Gothic-style Znojmo Castle, which offers sweeping views over the Dyje River valley. The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Catherine, tucked just beyond the castle gardens, remains one of South Moravia’s most important heritage sites. Just beyond the square, you can explore the Znojmo Underground.
- Dining Options. Beyond the refined restaurant inside Hotel Mariel, the Old Town is full of wine bars and cozy restaurants offering traditional Moravian dishes, modern European menus, and Italian comfort food. Local favorites within a short waddle include La Familia Café Bistro, Bistro Mikuláš, and the intimate Vínny Sklep U Sommeliera, where you can sip regional vintages paired with cheeses and smoked meats.
Check-In Experience
We arrived from the side entrance, stepping in directly from the parking lot. What we found was not a grand lobby, but a compact check-in counter marked simply with “Recepce”, a small, unassuming desk tucked just off to the side. It caught us a bit off guard, but it suited the low-key atmosphere of the place. A waitress, who also worked at the restaurant, came over with a friendly smile and took over the check-in process casually. No ID check, no formalities, just a set of keys handed over, a quick overview of where to find our room, and a rundown of dining options. The entire process took less than three minutes, and although unconventional, it felt smooth and surprisingly personal.
Reception hours are practical: from Sunday to Thursday, staff are available from 06:00 to 22:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays, until 23:00. Official check-in starts at 14:00, and check-out is expected by 10:00. While it may lack the polish of a traditional front desk, the informality here adds to the charm, especially if you’re arriving late or prefer a no-fuss welcome.

Room and Amenities
Hotel Mariel offers a range of room categories that cater to various types of travelers, from compact doubles ideal for short stays to larger apartments designed for extended visits or those seeking extra space. Options typically include standard rooms, deluxe doubles, and apartment-style accommodations with added living areas and kitchenettes.
Our stay took us to the very top floor of an adjacent building, technically part of the hotel but separate from the main structure. It was a surprise, and not exactly a pleasant one at first. No elevator meant we had to carry luggage up multiple flights of steep stairs, which felt like something reception could have warned us about during check-in.The building itself has historic charm, but accessibility is not one of its strong points.
We stayed in one of the hotel’s apartments. Inside, the space felt generous: a main room with a couch, a flat-screen TV, and a table suitable for working or eating. The small kitchen was equipped with the basics: a sink, stove, fridge, and sufficient utensils to prepare a quick meal or make coffee. But don’t expect complimentary coffee or tea; none were provided. The bathroom was large and functional, with a walk-in shower and plenty of light. A separate toilet added a touch of convenience, especially for two guests sharing the space. Towels, shower gel, and shampoo were included, though minimally, just enough for essentials, with no extra pampering touches.
While the space itself was clean and well laid out, the climb and the lack of advance notice about the building’s separation left a mixed impression. Still, for guests who don’t mind the stairs, the apartment’s size and quiet top-floor location offer good value, especially for longer stays or travelers seeking more independence.

Culinary Experience
Breakfast
Breakfast at Hotel Mariel takes place downstairs, just beside the reception area, in what doubles as the hotel’s restaurant. The setup immediately stood out; each table was already laid out with a small assortment of breakfast starters. Fresh-squeezed juice, slices of bread with butter, and a few small accompaniments were pre-set and waiting, which gave the experience a homely, almost communal feel.
We waddled in, mentioned it was two of us, and the staff guided us to a table for two. No buffet lines or self-service; instead, we were handed a menu and invited to choose from a selection of fresh, made-to-order breakfast dishes—options covered both savory and sweet preferences—from eggs and toast to pancakes or lighter fruit-based plates. Once we placed our order, the wait wasn’t long at all. Everything came out hot, fresh, and nicely presented. It wasn’t an overly lavish spread, but it hit all the right notes, a calm, unhurried start to the day with just the right level of attention and quality.

Hotel Restaurant
On our last day, we decided to try the in-house restaurant at Hotel Mariel. It felt fitting to close our stay with a meal from the hotel kitchen, and it turned out to be a calm and easygoing experience. The restaurant is situated just off the lobby on the ground floor, offering guests the choice between indoor seating and the outdoor terrace. Since the sun was out and the breeze felt just right, we headed to the terrace, which remained pleasantly quiet throughout the afternoon. The menu offers a balanced selection of regional and national Czech dishes, including both meat and vegetarian options, plus a few classic desserts. Nothing overly complex, just straightforward, well-prepared meals. The restaurant has even received a “Dobrá restaurace regionální a národní kuchyně” diploma from the European Centre for Ecology and Tourism, awarded to places that deliver high-quality regional and local cuisine. This recognition is part of the Stezky dědictví (Heritage Trails) program, lending the kitchen a well-deserved credibility.
We ordered two main dishes and drinks. The wait was slightly longer than what we’d experienced at other spots in town, so it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re in a hurry. But once the food arrived, everything was fresh, warm, and thoughtfully plated. The service was polite and low-key, no rush, no fuss. The whole meal felt relaxed and satisfying, which is exactlywhat we were looking for on our last day. For two people and one penguin, the total came to 800 CZK (around €32), which felt fair for the quality and setting. While Znojmo offers flashier and more memorable dining options, Mariel’s restaurant is a solid, reliable choice, especially convenient if you’re already staying at the hotel.

Facilities and Activities
The Historic Wine Cellar
One of the standout features of Hotel Mariel, though we didn’t have time to experience it ourselves, is its impressive wine cellar, which sits beneath the hotel and connects directly to Znojmo’s rich winemaking heritage. Known as one of the oldest and largest wine cellars in the town, it dates back to medieval times when it was originally part of a vineyard located where Mariánské náměstí stands today. The cellar spans several expansive rooms, linked by winding corridors, all of which are preserved in their original condition. Thick stone walls, aged wooden beams, and a natural patina on every surface create an atmosphere that reflects centuries of Moravian winemaking tradition. In the upper part of the cellar, there’s a cozy wine bar with seating and a fireplace room watched over by a carved wooden statue of Mariel. The lower levels reveal ancient stone blocks that highlight just how deeply rooted this place is in Znojmo’s past. If you want to visit, the cellar is open daily from 15:00, closing at 22:00 on Sunday through Thursday, midnight on Friday, and 23:00 on Saturday.

The Living Room Lounge Space
Hotel Mariel also offers a cozy multi-purpose space known as the Obývák, which translates to “living room,” designed for casual gatherings, informal workshops, or small family celebrations. It’s divided into two areas: a dining section for shared meals or group work, and a comfortable lounge-style zone set up for relaxed conversation. Thoughtfully furnished with comfort in mind, the space invites guests to slow down and enjoy a home-like atmosphere, whether you’re connecting with others or just looking for a quieter corner away from your room. While we didn’t use the Obývák during our visit, it’s a welcoming touch for those traveling in groups or looking to host something low-key during their stay. The opening hours are generous too, Monday through Thursday from 10:00 to 22:00, Friday until midnight, Saturday until 23:00, and Sunday again until 22:00. It’s one more way Hotel Mariel blends design, warmth, and community under one roof.

Thai Massages
Hotel Mariel doesn’t just focus on good food, great rooms, and historical charm; it also prioritizes guest wellbeing. A standout feature in their service offerings is a full menu of Thai massages, carried out by professionally trained therapists in a massage studio located directly across the street from the hotel. The massage therapists come with training from certified schools in Thailand, and the treatments range from traditional Thai massages to oil-based Swedish styles, herbal compress therapy, and specialized facial or reflexology treatments. Prices are set and competitive: a traditional Thai massage costs 820 Kč for 60 minutes or 1,140 Kč for 90 minutes, while options like aroma oil massages and herbal therapies range from 940 Kč to 1,430 Kč, depending on the length and type. There are also shorter treatments like a 30-minute head, back, and shoulder massage (550 Kč), reflex foot therapy (660 Kč), or even a full 100-minute mud body wrap (1,540 Kč).
Value for Money
For our two-night stay at Hotel Mariel in June 2025, we paid a total of €193.26. Considering what the hotel offers, an excellent location in the heart of Znojmo, spacious apartment-style rooms, a quality in-house restaurant, optional Thai massage services, and unique features like the historic wine cellar, we found the price fair and balanced. While there were a few minor drawbacks, such as the absence of an elevator and the lack of complimentary coffee or tea in the room, the overall comfort, quiet setting, and convenience made the rate feel justified. It’s not a budget hotel, but for travelers who value space, walkability, and an atmosphere that leans toward relaxed boutique over big-chain polish, Mariel delivers good value for the money spent.
Verdict
★★★☆☆
Hotel Mariel in Znojmo offers a distinct and refreshing alternative to the more traditional accommodations found throughout South Moravia. It blends a contemporary, understated style with thoughtful local touches, from its historic wine cellar to its casual yet competent restaurant and surprisingly homey common spaces, such as the Obývák. While not without its quirks, like the top-floor climb in a building without an elevator or the absence of small in-room extras, the experience overall feels authentic, comfortable, and quietly refined. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t try too hard to impress but wins you over with ease, warmth, and a sense of individuality. If you’re looking for a modern stay that’s still deeply connected to the spirit of Znojmo, Hotel Mariel is a solid choice worth bookmarking.
