You can find Schloss Ort on a small island in Lake Traunsee in Gmunden, Austria. It is one of the country’s most picturesque and historically rich castles. Dating back to around 1080, it is one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut region. It has seen a succession of noble families, including the Habsburgs, who once used it as a hunting lodge. The castle is connected to the mainland by a charming wooden footbridge. It is renowned for its fairy-tale setting against the backdrop of the Traunstein mountain. A popular local legend recounts the tale of the “White Lady” of Schloss Ort, a ghost said to be the spirit of a betrayed noblewoman who is said to roam the halls on misty nights. Today, the castle hosts weddings, events, and a small museum, and it gained modern fame as the filming location for the Austrian TV series Schlosshotel Orth. You can waddle across the wooden bridge and around the castle. We did and left a penguin stone behind the castle walls, so now it’s a natural part of it.
