Admont Abbey, located in Austria’s Styria region, is a renowned Benedictine monastery known for its stunning architecture and rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1074, it is at the foot of the Gesäuse Mountains. It serves as a spiritual and historical centerpiece of the region. One of its most extraordinary features is its library, the largest monastic library in the world. This room, completed in 1776, spans over 70 meters in length and boasts a breathtaking Baroque design featuring intricate frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte, as well as white and gold shelves that house over 70,000 volumes. An interesting fact about the library is that it contains hidden doors built into the bookcases, which blend into the walls, allowing monks to move discreetly between rooms. As we waddled outside the abbey, we found a nice place in the gardens to hide a penguin stone.
