The Eagle’s Nest, known in German as Kehlsteinhaus, is a historic mountaintop retreat atop the Kehlstein mountainnear Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, Germany. Built in 1938 as a 50th birthday gift for Adolf Hitler, the structure served as a diplomatic and ceremonial site rather than a regular residence. It is positioned at over 1,800 meters (6,000 feet) and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. Despite its dark origins tied to the Nazi regime, the Eagle’s Nest today functions as a restaurant and tourist attraction, drawing visitors intrigued by its dramatic setting and historical significance. Its survival through World War II and subsequent transformation into a site of education and remembrance make it a poignant destination for those exploring Germany’s complex past. Thanks to poppjan & Petra, who took a penguin stone on their adventure, one is hidden close by the estate.
