Ljubljana Castle’s origins date back to the 11th century, first mentioned in historical records in 1144. Initially built as a wooden and stone fortification, it evolved into a more robust castle by the 15th century. The castle has played various roles throughout history, from a medieval stronghold to a Renaissance residence and even a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars. Its strategic position made it a vital defense point against invasions and uprisings, contributing significantly to the region’s turbulent past. And legend says it stands on a slain dragon.
