The Castel Sismondo is situated in Piazza Malatesta and stands as one of the city’s most significant landmarks. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the once grand fortified palace remains today. The palace was commissioned and designed by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini, to showcase his power and prestige. Construction began in 1438 with the help of Filippo Brunelleschi. Strategically located, the palace was an important part of the city’s defense, with the Roman city walls passing through its vicinity. It boasted 160 windows and six tall towers and was surrounded by a deep moat with four drawbridges, covering an area of about 3,000 square meters. It is truly a surprise to see it and worth the waddle. The penguin stone is within its walls now.
