The Cathedral’s majestic bell tower, also known as “Giotto’s Bell Tower,” is a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. It has a square base, approximately 15 meters (49.2 feet) on each side, with corner reinforcements extending to the cantilevered horizontal crown, which is 84.7 meters (278 feet) above the ground. A stairway consisting of 414 steps provides access to the summit balconies. This stairway passes through three superimposed loggias featuring elegant pairs of mullioned windows. At the highest level, large three-mullioned windows offer splendid panoramic views. Although you have to waddle upstairs, it is worth it. The views are stunning. And a funny story about this penguin stone: we put it there by accident. We tried out locations where to put it when the stone got stuck in the place where it is now.
