The monument is located at the lake in El Retiro Park in Madrid, one of the city’s most visited places. This sculpture-cum-landmark pays tribute to King Alfonso XII. Inaugurated in 1922 by his son, Alfonso XIII, the monument is inspired by those designed by Victor Manuel II in Rome and William I in Berlin. It was created by the Catalan architect José Grases Riera. We went to the park for an evening run first but then decided to come back for an early morning waddle. The park is vast and has a lot of space to waddle, but the monument captured our hearts. We decided to hide one of the penguin stones here. You have to waddle all the way to the statue when looking for a small crack in the stone railing.
