Castles are usually dramatic, and Bled Castle is no exception. It is perched atop a 130-meter cliff overlooking the serene waters of Lake Bled. Bled Castle is Slovenia’s oldest and most iconic fortress. Visiting the castle will take you back in history, give you breathtaking views, and more. If you are a castle buff, you should not skip this one.

Bled Castle, or Blejski Grad in Slovenian, dates back to 1011 AD, making it the oldest castle in Slovenia. Originally built as a Romanesque fortress by the German Emperor Henry II, the castle served as a defensive stronghold. Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting various architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance. The castle’s strategic position on a high cliff made it nearly impregnable, vital to the region’s history.

One of the most fascinating chapters in Bled Castle’s history involves its use as a seat of the Bishops of Brixen, who managed the castle and the surrounding lands. Their influence is evident in the well-preserved chapel, which features stunning frescoes from the 16th century, including a depiction of the German King Henry II, who founded the castle.

Bled Castle was also once visited by Yugoslav King Alexander I, adding a touch of royal history to its legacy.

Every ancient castle has its legends, and Bled Castle is no exception. Local folklore tells the tale of a widowed noblewoman, Poliksena, who lived in the castle after her husband’s death. Stricken with grief, she decided to donate all her wealth to build a chapel in honor of the Virgin Mary. However, local robbers stole her gold, leaving her with nothing. Determined to fulfill her vow, she sold her remaining possessions and commissioned a bell for the chapel.

Tragically, the boat carrying the bell sank in a storm, taking it to the bottom of Lake Bled. Distraught, Poliksena left for a convent in Rome, where she passed away. Upon hearing her story, the Pope ordered a new bell to be cast and sent to the chapel. To this day, it is said that if you ring the “Wishing Bell” in the chapel, your deepest desires will come true.

One of the main reasons visitors flock to Bled Castle is the stunning panoramic view of Lake Bled, the island, and the surrounding Julian Alps. You can capture postcard-perfect photos from the castle’s terraces that will leave your friends in awe.

The castle itself houses several intriguing exhibits. The museum showcases the history of the Bled region, with artifacts ranging from the Iron Age to the present. You can also visit the castle’s wine cellar, where you can bottle your wine, complete with a wax seal—a perfect souvenir from your visit.

Take advantage of the Gothic-style chapel, adorned with 16th-century frescoes, and the printing shop, where you can see Gutenberg’s printing press demonstrations. The castle also features a traditional forge, where blacksmiths create beautiful metalworks, and a herbal gallery with an array of local medicinal herbs.

Bled Castle is open year-round, with slightly varying hours depending on the season. The best time to visit is spring or fall when the weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller. It’s advisable to arrive early in the day to avoid the peak tourist rush and fully enjoy the serene atmosphere.

You can buy tickets at the entrance, with options for guided tours to learn deeper insight into the castle’s history and legends. Tickets start at 17 €.

Bled Castle is easily accessible by several means.

    • Waddle up. The most popular way to reach the castle is by waddling. From the town center or the lake’s shore, it’s a scenic 15-20 minute walk uphill to the castle. The path is well-marked, but it’s a bit steep, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time to enjoy the views along the way.
    • By Car. If you prefer to drive, there’s a small parking lot near the castle. Follow the signs for Bled Castle, and you’ll find the entrance to the parking area. Parking can be limited, especially during peak tourist season, so arriving early is recommended.
    • By Bicycle. Bled is a bike-friendly destination, and you can rent a bike in town to reach the castle. The route to the castle includes some uphill sections, so be prepared for a workout. You can leave your bike at the base of the hill and walk the rest of the way up.
    • By Tourist Train. During the summer, a small tourist train runs around Lake Bled and stops at various points of interest, including the base of the hill leading to Bled Castle. This is a fun option for families with children.

We did not go inside the castle but waddled up to see the views, and it was also worth it. So if you can spare some time, go inside as well.

Enjoy the castle and waddle on!
