Rocca a Mare Fortress, also known as Koules Fortress, is a striking Venetian stronghold at the entrance of Heraklion’s harbor in Crete, Greece. Constructed in the early 16th century, it served as a key defense against pirate and Ottoman attacks, showcasing the strategic importance of Crete during the Venetian era. An interesting fact about the fortress is its enduring symbol: the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark, prominently carved into its walls, representing Venice’s power and influence. Close to the fortress, hidden within the stone wall, lies the penguin stone our dear and very talented friend kiriakosharitakis placed there.
