Grüner See, which translates to Green Lake, is located in the Hochschwab mountains of Styria, Austria, near the village of Tragöess. It is part of the municipality Tragöß-Sankt Katharein. Forests and three mountains surround the lake: Pribitz, Meßnerin, and Trenchtling, all of the Hochschwab Mountains. Grüner See is particularly fascinating because its size and depth vary dramatically throughout the year. The lake is shallow in winter and early spring, and the surrounding meadow is accessible for hiking. However, as the snow melts in late spring, the lake can expand to a depth of 12 meters (about 40 feet), submerging the meadow and even some hiking trails, creating an otherworldly underwater landscape that attracts divers from around the world. Thanks to Ludka, who took a penguin stone on an adventure, you can find one near the lake, chillin’ on a tree trunk.
