The former missile base on Devínska Kobyla in Slovakia stands as a fascinating relic of the Cold War era. You can find it within the Devínska Kobyla hills near Bratislava, which was once a part of Czechoslovakia’s air defense system, designed to protect against potential attacks during the tense political climate of the time. Today, the area is an open-air historical site slowly falling apart. We stopped and explored it on our way to Devínska Kobyla’s lookout tower. You can waddle inside and explore remnants of the base, such as bunkers, barracks, and missile storage areas, which provide a window into the military strategies and defense infrastructure of the past. We left a penguin stone at the entrance to one of the bunkers. It was an early morning, and the mist made it a little eery.
