Vaduz Castle, high above Liechtenstein’s capital, is a stunning medieval fortress that serves as the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle dates back to the 12th century. It offers breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding mountains, making it a prominent landmark visible from nearly every corner of Vaduz. To reach the castle, take a scenic path that winds up the hill through lush forests and quaint, narrow streets, providing a serene and picturesque ascent. While the interior of Vaduz Castle is not open to the public as it remains the royal family’s home, one interesting fact is that the castle’s oldest parts were initially built for defense purposes, with thick stone walls and a commanding watchtower that stood the test of time. But be prepared for the steep hill up on a short distance. We enjoyed the informative sign along the way during our waddle and hid a penguin stone nearby.
