The Starina Water Reservoir, located in the northeast of Slovakia within the Poloniny National Park, is the largest reservoir in the country and a crucial source of drinking water for the eastern regions. Completed in 1988, the reservoir was created by damming the Cirocha River, which involved the relocation of several villages. Covering an area of approximately 311 hectares and surrounded by protected forested landscapes, Starina is notable not only for its essential role in water supply but also for its pristine natural environment, making it a significant ecological and recreational site. The reservoir and its surroundings are known for their rich biodiversity, including numerous rare and endangered species, contributing to the area’s environmental significance. Close to the reservoir is a lookout tower where you have a beautiful view of it, and where now a penguin stone resides. Look for the tree next to the observation deck and underneath the moss.
