Komenda Castle dates back to the 13th century, a period marked by feudal lords and fortified strongholds. Originally constructed as a defensive fortress, the castle played a significant role in the region’s medieval defense network. Over the centuries, it underwent several transformations, reflecting different eras’ architectural styles and needs. The castle’s most notable period of significance came in the 16th century when the powerful Knights of the Teutonic Order owned it. This chivalric order, known for its role in the Crusades, left an indelible mark on the castle’s history. Their influence is still evident in the castle’s robust fortifications and Gothic architectural elements. Although it’s small, it is worth stopping there on your way to Ljubljana. The view is fantastic, and if you call upfront, you can even get a nice meal at the local restaurant. We only stopped by and left one penguin stone behind.
