The Martinengo Bastion in Heraklion, part of the city’s impressive Venetian walls, is a testament to the strategic military architecture of the 16th century. It is most famous for housing the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, the celebrated author of Zorba the Greek, whose epitaph reads, “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.” An interesting fact about the bastion is that its construction utilized materials from older ruins, including ancient Greek and Roman sites, a common practice to save resources. You can now find a penguin stone in this historical setting, thanks to kiriakosharitakis. Look for the place where the wall starts to fall apart.
