How much is a trip to Tallinn and Helsinki, and what to expect
Every travel is about planning, especially if you want to save some money and have the best possible time. We also do some planning, and in this blog post, we give you all details about our trip to Tallinn and Helsinki. It might be a more boring post, but hopefully, it will help with your planning.
Traveling to Estonia
There are many flights to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. And because Tallinn is located at the seaside, you can easily access it also via ship from Helsinki or Stockholm. Both options are popular to take.
We arrived by plane from Vienna directly to Tallinn. We bought the flight tickets about two months in advance.
The price is for two people as penguins travel for free.
Item | From-To | Departure | Arrival | Total Price | Price/Person |
Flight Ticket | Vienna-Tallinn | 6th of April | 6th of April | €219.00 | €109.50 |
Tallinn-Vienna | 10th of April | 10th of April | €109.50 |
Where to stay in Tallinn
Tallinn is a charming city known as a medieval town with a vibrant cultural scene and modern amenities. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, choosing the right neighborhood to stay in can significantly enhance your experience of the city. We usually prefer to stay close to Old Town, basically within waddling distance of many things. When we know we will waddle a lot, we like to sometimes take a break at the hotel.
This time we stayed at the CRU Hotel. It is very close to Viru Gate and, for us, a perfect location. The hotel is charming, with a Michelin Guide restaurant CRU Restaurant attached to the premises.
We checked in a got a room at the far end of the hotel. It felt like waddling through castle hallways.
The room we got was huge, with all necessities. We enjoyed the sofa in the room a lot. The bathroom was basic, and the water stayed on the ground after showering, but it did the job.
We stayed fours night, and the total price for the room was 350 €, breakfast included.
What other expenses to expect when visiting Tallinn and Helsinki
Depending on your spending habits, you will spend some money on a few more items, from traveling to buying souvenirs.
One ticket we purchased before arriving was the ticket to the ship from Tallinn to Helsinki and back. The price is for two people; it’s a roundtrip, and penguins travel for free as usual.
Item | From-To | Departure | Arrival | Total Price | Price/Person |
Boat Ticket | Tallinn-Helsinki | 8th of April | 8th of April | €78.00 | €39.00 |
Helsinki-Tallinn | 8th of April | 8th of April | €39.00 |
Another expense you can expect is public transport. We bought the Green Card at the airport and put credit on it. More information here.
We bought two Green Cards with a credit of 10 € each, and the deposit is 2 € per card. The total was 24 €, enough for the days we were in Tallinn.
Butget for food
Another expense you will have is food. Here the price depends on what you prefer to eat. Regarding food, we usually have a higher budget as we want to try a lot of the local cuisine.
With breakfast included, we only had to take care of lunch and dinner, and of course, snacks in between.
We visited three restaurants and then ate as well in local markets and had a few desserts. Overall we spent about 400 € (but note that one restaurant we visited was the CRU Restaurant, where prices are slightly higher). This also includes our one-day trip to Helsinki, where on the food we spend 113 €. So, if you are going only to Tallinn, then it’s minus those. Also, the price is for two people.
Admissions and souvenirs
The last expenses you can expect are entrances and souvenirs. Here we did not spend as much on admissions as we mostly waddled around and enjoyed both cities, Tallinn and Helsinki.
- We only spend 30 € on admission to the Estonian Maritime Museum.
- More money we spend on souvenirs, which cost us 95 €. This includes buying three penguins 😅, postcards, some magnets, etc.
That’s about it for the expenses. Counting together the flight tickets, 219 €, then the accommodation, 350 €, travel expenses, 102 €, food 400 € and others, 125 € the total of our trip was 1 196 €. This includes Tallinn and the one-day trip to Helsinki.
