We started our road trip in Slovenia, where we planned to stop at Ljubljana as the first thing to explore. We had the advantage of the car, so on the way to the charming capital, we stopped at Komenda Castle. You can find it at an elevation in the heart of Polzela. It’s quite an old castle, and first, it was mentioned in the Charter of Aquileia in 1149, so it has witnessed several historical events and changes in ownership. It was a short stop, but worth seeing.

The Komenda Castle is an important cultural and historical monument. It was held by the Maltese Knights from 1323 to 1780 and plays a significant role as a cultural hub today. The castle offers a unique journey through time, showcasing its rich history and unique elements. One notable feature is the ancient lion crafted from Pohorje marble, proudly standing on the fence near the main entrance. Additionally, a bronze plaque above the stairs with a portrait of the renowned poet Dr. France Prešeren commemorating his visits to Komenda from 1817 to 1819 to see his uncle, Anton Muhovec, the priest in Polzela.

The Name’s Origin

The German name for Polzela, Heilenstein, derives from the castle itself. The word “Stein” (stone) was commonly used for many mansions of that era, while “heil” likely originates from the High German word “hël,” meaning loud or reverberating. This etymology adds another layer of historical intrigue to the castle’s story.

A Modern Renaissance

2011 Komenda Castle underwent a significant renovation, breathing new life into this historic monument. The municipality of Polzela has since developed several new venues within the castle, enhancing its appeal as a center for tourism, culture, and social events.

  • First, the castle is charming, and you can waddle around and take pictures. It is also a popular wedding venue; we know why: it’s beautiful.
  • Second, the views from the castle are great. You can already get a feel of what to expect in Slovenia.
  • Third, that’s our personal; there is a swing, and we love swings.
  • Fourth, there is a great restaurant, 3 Poezije. We didn’t manage to eat there as it was closed (and it is recommended to call and make a reservation upfront), but based on the reviews, we will return for sure.
  • Fifth, there is a penguin stone here now.

Komenda Castle in Polzela is not just a simple chateau; it’s a living piece of history that continues to evolve and inspire. We recommend stopping and taking a break, enjoying the moment, and immersing yourself in its timeless elegance and rich cultural heritage.

Enjoy the Komenda and waddle more!
