Living most of my life at the seaside with warm weather I only felt cold air during winter days when locked up for a few months in a dark corner before summer came again. Once saved by my owner I had the possibility to experience real winter and not just feel the cold air making the feather bristle.
It took me by surprise as I first saw the crystallized water falling from the sky called snow. The sky was grey and cloudy and the day was rather cold. Traveling by train and observing the country slowly change the colors till it became white. It was like a magic veil covered the country suddenly.
The snow looked marvelous and fluffy like a cloud or whip creme. Couldn’t wait for a chance to jump into it, but little did I know what awaits me.
When my owners finally took me out the next day I was restless and forgot to take my scarf. Excited as I was I jumped right into the snow and was shocked by how cold it is. From behind the window of the train, I imagined snow to be soft and warm as cotton wool. Expecting it to be really nice to the touch, it disappointed me as it was cold and made me shiver.
Going right back inside, snow is not for me. My resolution clear, never to go near the clusters of ice crystals that fall from the sky.
Snow is cold, sometimes hard, and does not taste good either.
However, the next morning my owners took me to the window to show me the beautiful scenery the snow created during the night. It looked amazing and the trees seemed to be covered in white miniature feathers. The view was fabulous and I decided to give the snow a second chance.
And I am glad I did.
This time I also prepared better and took my red scarf and cap, not underestimating snow again.
And I learned snow is fun.
One can build a snowman (or snow penguin), go sledding, make snow angels, and many more fun activities. Still, my preference stays with warmer weather.
Even though I am a penguin, temperatures that are below the freezing point are just not for me and I am glad I do not live in a country covered in snow all year long like some of my penguin brothers and sister in the southern hemisphere.
What activities are you doing during the winter?
