The Best Views in Tallinn

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a city steeped in history and culture. With its winding cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and stunning views of the Baltic Sea, countless viewpoints offer breathtaking cityscape sights. The Old Town part of Tallinn is seriously like a fairy tale. In this blog post, we explore some of the best viewpoints in Tallinn that you simply can’t miss on your next visit. 

If you follow us, you know we love to waddle up towers to get the best view of the city we are in. With Tallinn, you don’t have to climb anything. The city offers various viewing platforms, each providing a unique panorama perspective, so it’s a good idea to leave enough time to see a few of them while you’re here.

#1 Piiskopi observation platform

One of the great things about the Piiskopi Observation Platform is that it’s less crowded than some of the other viewpoints in Tallinn, making it a great spot to enjoy the views in peace. The platform is accessible via a narrow staircase, so it’s not recommended for those with mobility issues or who fear heights.

The small, garden-shaped observation platform on the western side of Toompea offers a beautiful view of the Pelgulinna and Kalamaja districts. This hidden square is also known as the Bishop’s Garden. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the gardens belonging to the Cathedral were located there. The two oldest oak trees of Toompea can also be found here.

#2 Patkuli Viewing Platform

The Patkuli viewing platform is our second favorite viewing platform.
It is in one of the most ancient parts of Tallinn. It has an idyllic and enchanting view of the Old Town and its towers and walls, which can be seen down to the port.

The stairway leading up to the platform was constructed in 1903. There are 157 steps connecting Toompea Hill to the town below, with the stairway coming out in Toompark by Snelli Pond. This viewpoint is extremely popular with tour groups, so in peak season, you may be fighting for a spot to get a good photo.

#3 Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform

Our favorite spot in Tallinn, though; unfortunately, we are not the only ones who think so. This is the most frequented viewing platform, and if you want to enjoy it alone, come early morning.

Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. It is on the northern side of Toompea hill. It’s our favorite because it provides excellent views over the red roofs and towering spires of the Old Town and the gleaming highrise buildings in the new part of the city.
Finding this viewpoint can be a little bit of a puzzle, but if you head up to Toompea Hill towards the North Side, you can find it easily from there.

This and Patkuli viewing platform are the two most popular places to see Tallinn from above. 

Apart from these three, there is also St. Olaf’s Tower. The St Olaf’s viewing platform will lead you right on top of the church itself! It’s open from April – October each year but closed in the winter season, and the price is 3 €. You’ll have to climb 232 steps to the top, but the view you will receive is epic.

And then we have the Tallinn city walls that you can climb up to get fantastic views from another perspective. The price to enter is about 3 €.

No matter which viewing platform you choose, each will give you astonishing views of Tallinn and everything it offers. The city will steal your heart as it did ours.
