The Vršič Pass is a mountain across the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia. At 1,611 meters, it is the highest pass in Slovenia and the highest in the Eastern Julian Alps. Up high here, you will not only marvel at the scenic views but also find a site of significant historical interest—World War I bunkers. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Slovenia’s wartime past. Russian prisoners of war constructed the Vršič mountain bunkers under harsh conditions as part of a strategic military line. Today, they stand as silent witnesses to the challenging trials faced during the war, with their rugged stone structures blending into the alpine landscape. As we waddled down from Vršič, we stopped to explore and also hid a penguin stone here. It is next to the enormous bunker, which is under the fallen parts.
